I am posting this because, in the past few weeks, I have been twice asked when I was planning to run Waypoint again. This strikes me as a good reason to seriously consider the possibility...

I'd basically put the game on hold because of work and study committments which are now no longer in place. They've not been in place for a while, to be honest, but I had other projects to work on instead (Victoriana being one of them, various writing projects being other ones...). Now, I am pondering just plunging ahead and booking a site and setting a date and all that malarky.

Site is likely to be the Gladstone scout centre initially because that is a great site with a lot of potential which we have used before.

There will be changes, however.

1) Rules. I've said this before but am repeating it here, the rules will be rewritten completely. Mainly to simplify them. Am pondering something similar to the system that worked for Gloriana but that is still open to negotiation.

2) Setting. I've pondered the idea of simply picking up where we left off, with the timeline pretty much frozen at the end of the last event and allowing players to play their new characters if they wanted to. In fact, my first event idea was to be an Imperial Banquet hosted by the new Emperor to celebrate the first anniversary of the end of the war with all the players who had ever played being invited to attend as a reward for their involvement. New players could be worked in somehow if needed. However, while I may still run that particular event, I think it will now be a one off and not run as the initial event of the reboot. Now I am thinking of moving the timeline forward a bit. This would mean:
 - Completely new characters for everyone and every one starting at the same level, thereby avoiding cliques of 'oldies' and 'newbies'.
 - Updated history with the chance to explore the logical progression of the different changes that the players have brought about. These include:
                   - The Dagdan Commonwealth making the Dagdans a massive political force (albeit a loosely allied one)
                   - The existence of Gate engines (how many people noticed that the anti-Quain Dyr weapon the Cybel invented caused someone to teleport randomly when it was fired at a non Quain Dyr? Make it bigger, aim it at a ship, add a navigational device to control it...)
                   - Avar uniting under a single, autocratic ruler who is relatively benign and therefore, like the Dagdans, entering the galactic stage as a political entity
                    - The Althari computer being saner and the gate network being better controlled.

I think we can have a lot of fun with these changes to the setting and possibly many more I haven't considered yet...

Anyway, I shall update people as and when things are fixed. In the meantime, feel free to throw ideas at me in comments, ask questions, and so on...

Pick up in the future - full reboot.
Rules simplified but not quite as simplified as that.
Have a chat with Mr Perry at some point to understand his view on the Avar empire.
I shall chat with Mike I re Dagdans, we had a couple of ideas for other changes that might be in the offing.

After this much time off the game, I'd definitely suggest a full reboot and new characters all round. Move the timeline forward a few years perhaps, with exploits of old characters moved into the background material with the possibility for the odd guest appearance.

Last night I posited 20 years. Mr Parr suggested that might not be long enough.

Too far ahead risks losing the thread back to where it was left. Chris was mainly concerned about players saying 'but its only been 100 years, can't my character have been cloned/turned into an immortal robot and therefore still be around for me to play?'

Now, if it is established early on(and made clear that this is a hard rule) that the only way old characters can come back will be as NPCs or occasional one offs set in the past - no matter what the situation - then it is less of an issue from that point of view when it is set. I am thinking 10 - 20 years which still allows some characters to be around (though some of them could have died or gone awol or walkabout or whatever).

I do, however, now have an amusing concept in my head of a proper 'Hollywood' reboot with grittier storylines, better special effects and at least one of the main characters randomly changing gender and another being a robot in disguise all along :)

Surely the answer to "but can't my character..." is "NO, and if you ask me again I will ban you from coming"?

I like the Gladstone centre. It's right on my doorstep I could even go home to bed and a warm shower or bath.

It is a good site because the warden is (or at least was, no idea if the same guy is in charge still) a very nice bloke who understands the needs of LRP. Plus it has AV equipment which is very useful for sci fi...

Cool. I need to try and get back into LRPing again, before my body gives up completely and I loose more of my marbles than before.

Just so you know, we're scaling back the number of refs to just Dave and I. We will also be the plot team.

You're welcome to come along and play or crew of course. If you have any ideas on world development please email them to one of us. Anyone whose ideas we use will be credited.

Always got ideas, part of my problem. Has David's email changed?

I'd go with 'in the future!'
And [slight 'gritty reboot' tangent] not wearing racer back vests back to front, as it is a little bit disruptive every time I see it: tense scene, great acting, back to front vest, good plot, (look! back to front vest!!) moral ambiguity, timey wimey, (vest!)

If a group of players decide they fancy that look, I dont feel we can stop them :-)

I'd also favour a BS:G style reboot, cutting the comic elements and making it darker. Really strip the ruleset down to the bare mininal.

It may also be worth thinking about new ways to handle technology now, given how cheap the props have become.
